Pantheonic Roof

It was whilst watching a Bond movie the other night that I noticed that no-one seemed to have realised that the baddie had built a massive underground lair/nuclear missile guidance base right in the middle of the island, under a lake. In fact, Mr. Bond stumbled upon it quite by accident. Lucky that. You would have thought that whole secret lair under the lake thing was so cliched that they would have thought twice about building it there in the first place. And that that would have been the first place 007 checked.

This got me thinking about a couple of things:

Firstly, surely the baddie would have needed an entire construction company to help him build the thing in the first place, and they can’t have all become his evil henchmen, could they? So someone would have known, got drunk, blabbed to his mates and the whole island would have known.

And secondly, Bermuda is an island in the middle of nowhere, so one would think that there would be one or two secret lairs here.

So where would they be, and which evil villains would own them? Do you think a place called
GoldenEye
would be way too obvious? The fact that it is hidden away in Tucker’s Town certainly lends credibility, but I never saw any mention of parking for a submarine or anything suspicious like that. And no-one owns it, which would make it difficult to justify have hundreds of uniformed guards patrolling the grounds with Uzis. Well, that is, until Oprah buys it.

Of course, there are a couple of secluded islands which could also fit the bill, but my favourite candidate is the new Berkeley School project. The fact that millions have been poured in with no visible result only serve to bolster my belief that there is some sort of underground labrynthe under Berkeley Hill, under the command of a character called ‘the Colonel‘.

The only other (not so secret) candidate could be the new 7 storey monstrosity being planned by HSBC right on Front Street. This would be a great ploy – just plant the centre of your evil empire right where people don’t expect it.

  1. You’ll get a hoard of Bond fans on a photo shoot now !

  2. Hello Tom. (sory to barge in on your post). You metioned that you’d be interested in a Bermuda Camera Club. Well we’re having a kick off meeting on Monday with a decent group to get thing’s going. If you’re still interested drop me a note.

    All the best,
    Kieth.

  3. You make some good points here…. maybe after the construction crew finished the baddie just finished them all off? Of course, that might look suspicious if an entire construction crew went missing.

  4. Hi Tom, I’m a photographer from Rome, I like a lot your pics, is this the Pantheon?

  5. @gatekeeper – yes, that is the Pantheon. Probably one of the most impressive structures in Rome, IMHO, especially the way it sits in that beautiful square.

  6. I know that an underground lair accessible only by submarine sounds a little far-fetched, but try this link. http://members.tripod.com/terroristwatch/al_qaeda_in_the_us.htm

If you believe this – then fact is even stranger than fiction.

  7. I’m a new reader and was curious as to what kind of camera you use?

  8. Ian – either an old Canon Elph/Ixux 2.1 mp point & shoot, or a Panasonic DMC-FZ5 superzoom.

  9. You can look for secret lairs in New Orleans.
