Green Star

Happy St. Patrick’s Day ! Today also just happens to be my Birthday. That’s both good and bad. Why?

  1. Because there is always a party on my Birthday (good)
  2. Because Guinness just happens to be my favourite tipple (especially good)
  3. Because Guinness just happens to be my favourite tipple (not so good on Saturday morning)
  4. Because Guinness produced some of the most iconic advertising artwork of the 1930s and 40s, courtesy of artist John Gilroy (good)
  5. Because for many people their only perception of something Irish seems to be Lucky Charms (bad)
  6. Because some people dye their rivers green and put green food colouring in weak, tasteless lager (especially bad)
  7. Because I am a year older (neither good nor bad. To be honest, age doesn’t bother me , but the grey chest hairs do.)

There is no parade here in Bermuda, but there are plenty of opportunities to take a drop of the black stuff, to be sure.

And if you want to see a real slice of American-Irish storytelling to help celebrate the day, imagine this scene:

  • A future James Bond, dressed in a tunic, acting and singing (believe it or not) and conversing with leprechauns, and faeries in the late 1950s.

Oh yes, it’s Darby O’Gill and the Little People. You will never see Mishter Connery (aka Big Tam) in the same light again!

I’m off for a pint – have a great Paddy’s Day !

  1. I’m stuck inside banging on these little plastic bricks whilst my buddies are out quaffing the black stuff, heroically clogging the toilets of Bristols local alehouses with the legendary discharge that goes hand in hand with our black and white friend.

Still, at least I can chart their progress at lunchtime, then later on this evening.

  2. tq,
    Happy B-day ! 12:32 am is a bit early for a pint though ?

Cheers from the Cathedral end …

    GdV.

  3. I love your little pics. They show just enough information to be interesting and pretty, but leave out enough so that an object (even if the origin is clear) can really be anything the imagination allows for.

  4. @ultra toast mosha god – yes, that is one of the downsides of the black stuff…
@GdV – thanks, Mate. And no, it’s never too early – but it might be too late…
@Alex – thanks. I try to be creative. It works – sometimes.

  5. Hello:) Happy B-Day, and St. Patrick’s Day too YOU! I hope your day will be wonderful! Take care, Elisa:)

  6. hey, cool blog, I just happened upon you (ha ha that sounds wrong) happy b-day!!

  7. Happy b-day and enjoy st Pat’s day too! I will not be celebrating, as i have drunk lots and lots of alcohol lately – on Wednesday it was 2 friends’ birthdays, and on Thursday me and my uni mates were celebrating the end of term, so my liver needs a rest for a bit now…
Also, agree about your graphics, very cool and mysterious!

  9. Ahh, yes Darby O’Gill….I remember that film…and the banshee, and the little guys on the horses…

  10. Thanks to everyone for the Birthday wishes.
Sandy xx – where I live is beautiful, but as I am only on a work permit/visa, I can’t stay here forever. As for writing – I used to write a lot when I was younger, but right now this is it (because I assume you don’t mean javascript, visual basic, c# or SQL).
    slskenyon – ahh, the banshee…

  11. Happy birthday. I read you yesterday for the first time. There were a lot of coincidences that made me discover your blog, and I loved it. And then, your photos. I really, really love them. There’s one that means something special for me. I think you are right, never is too late or too early for a black pint. It is my favourite beer, and I miss it (When I lived in the town, it was easy to find pubs with it) Now that I’m in a little village, the only guinness I know, can be find in my fridge. Reading about yours makes me thing that tonight i may have it. Yep, every page seems to be grren today. Well, I’ll look for some other ways to celebrate St Patrick’s Day and escape from Fallas (Valencian thing, in Spain) Again, Happy Birthday and Happy Guinness!!!

  12. Yes, happy birthday, on my first day!

  13. annjay – thanks, and good luck with the blog…

Hope you capture some interesting pictures today! (okay, that’s a completely selfish wish on my part.)

  17. Thank you, I hope you are enjoying it. You should be drinking, je je, but I’m glad you took some moments to read your congratulations. I think I’m going to have a lonely dinner with some salmon, maybe a beer (the first inmonths, but all that talking, you know…) and my cat Tiger (same color as Hamish)I hope you get a lot of kisses and hugs on your special day. Don’t worry about gry hair, you look great!

  18. CC – yes, there seem to be a lot of birthdays this week. Unfortunately I have left my camera at home today – I don’t want it getting lost…

  19. carol – Hamish has already smothered me with hairs – they are his version of love, I think.

  20. I just ended up on your blog and really enjoy it. I have a friend who moved to Bermuda as a child and wish I had a job that would transplant me there… anyone looking for an accountant??? Please.

  24. R,D & k – good to hear from you ! Have a pint at the Ship for me !

  25. Happy Birthday To You…. From Kansas

Why is it that in the US of F#$@^%# A we eat corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day? I understand that in Ireland folks eat Irish Stew. This makes more sense, smells better and ya don’t burp as much.

  26. Granny – Thanks. I tend to avoid all of that corned beef and cabbage and just stick with the black stuff. It’s much better for you. In Ireland they tend to go for chips (as in french fries) more than Irish Stew.

  27. I’m glad you had a lot of people wishing you a happy birthday. I’m pisces too. Here is too noisy, I don’t know if I wiil be able to sleep. Good night!

  28. Tom, Slainte and Happy Birthday!

  29. Happy Birthday!! Don’t let them get yer lucky charms, and be shor to have a pint for yer paddy.

  30. I agree that Green-guiness is evil.

But I do like lucky charms.

  31. One assumes you are already having a happy birthday in Bermuda…I mean this is March 17th for heaven’s sake… and we’re still freezin’ here in the Northwest US. :) Thought your blog was wonderful. Keep posting. Check mine out if you have a chance. http://www.clarkcountydiva.com

  42. Tom~ Just stumbled upon your blog, I enjoy your photography and your writing style, but when I found out we both have the same birthday, you officially earned a place among my bookmarks.
Many happy returns of the day, mate.

  43. happy birthday! hope that this year brings you lots of joy and many more pints of guinness. i really love the intensity of your photos! keep it up, looking forward to your next postings.

  44. Hey just happened to stumble accross your blog. Happy b-day last Friday. Just wanted to say I know how it feels to have you birthday on a holiday…mine is on New Years but at least I always know people are having a great time on my bithday

  45. Happy Belated Birthday! I understand the pros and cons you’ve presented. My birthday is on the 16th of March, which usually makes for a pretty rough day on the 18th, because I’ve been drunk for two days. Being Irish I just don’t think it would be proper not to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day due to a nasty hangover.
I’ve just stumbled across your site today and wanted to tell you how much I love your photography. You are a true artist. It makes me very excited to recieve my first well built 35mm SLR, which should be arriving shortly (a late birthday present). Thank you for sharing and I can’t wait to see more!

  46. Thanks AllyKay!

  47. Check out my blog.
