Boating Blues
10Jul2006I love sailing. I race pretty much every weekend, and being on a sailboat in Bermuda is one of the best things you can do. Even when you have a bad day with bad results. Which is what we had on Saturday.
One of the things about sailing is that you get to despise power boats. They are loud and obnoxious (and that’s usually just the owners). And they don’t seem to understand the rules of boating, such as:
- Power gives way to sail (unless you are a government ferry)
- Give sailboats a wide berth
- No wake zone
Oh, and jet skis (aka PWCs) are even worse. So the news that the government is considering licenses for boating is a good idea. So why is it I find myself looking back on the days that I owned a power boat with envy?
- Because it is summertime, and everyone is rafting up somewhere
- Because there are no sails to roll
- Because going out after work on a boat with some Harbourfront sushi is so good
- Because one of the best ways to see the island is from the water
Because petrol prices are so reasonable here
There is also a big fishing tournament on at the moment in Bermuda, which means there are lots of big, fancy fishing boats about. And they go fast. But not as fast as Wildcat.
