These days, technology moves at light speed. If you manage to get your product on the “surge curve”, as I call it, you are onto a surefire winner.

One of the best ways of getting on the curve is via word of mouth. In Bermuda, because it’s so small, that phenomenon is even more apparent. Right now there are several items on a “surge curve” which are on my radar:

  • Heelys- you know you are onto a winner when the mainstream media is talking about your product, and schools are talking about banning it. I remember when they did the same with skateboards (ahem, the first time round) – if kids embrace your product in droves your CFO will be like a cartoon character with $$$ signs in their eyes. The only puzzle here is the one death attributed to the rolling shoes – I wonder if that was the wearer themselves or someone they mowed down in a shopping mall. My other concern is that years from now the current generation of young kids will flood the health system with heel-related posture issues.
  • Facebook- This site is on such a roll right now since they opened it up to non-students. Heck, even the Premier of Bermuda is on it, as is US Presidential hopeful Barack Obama. When politicians are using youth-oriented sites as vehicles to gain popularity/votes amongst that target demographic, it’s a sure sign you are hitting the big time.
  • The iPhone – There hasn’t been a day in the last six months when I haven’t seen a story about the iPhone. They advertised it at the Oscars. The latest ads are a work of genius – every grandmother worth her salt will be wanting one. I love my Blackberry 8800, but even I want an iPhone.

One final note – I recently discovered a great site called GridSkipper. As I am off to Paris and the Champagne Region next week I will be sure to take advantage of some of their tips. Which may mean that blog posting will be erratic, to say the least.
