Bermuda operates on Atlantic Standard Time (AST) – that is 4 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and one ahead of Eastern Standard Time (EST). Regardless of time zone, however, I always seem to be late.

Let me elaborate. I don’t think I am late. I am actually on time. But the person I am usually meeting has their watch (or clock) set differently to mine, so they think I am late.

Unfortunately we don’t have one of those atomic clocks in Bermuda for everyone to synchronise their watches to. But we do have the next best thing. Bermuda Cablevision. Because they supply cable boxes to a large percentage of the island, it means that that population all reference the same time, because the time displayed on their cable boxes is obtained from a central source.

So moving forward I would like to institute a new timekeeping standard for Bermuda – Bermuda Standard Time (BST), which would otherwise be known as Cablevision Time (CVT) to avoid confusion with British Summer Time.

So the next time I am purportedly late, I can ask the person to check their cable box, and based upon CVT I will actually be on time, or maybe even early.
