Feeling Blue

8Nov2007

I am not feeling great right now. Major back spasms are causing me all sorts of pain. Now, generally most men are not known to suffer illness too well. I can admit that I am one of those men. When I feel bad I don’t care how anyone else feels, I am on my deathbed, and I will always feel worse than anyone else. It is like a classic (some would say ultimate) case of one-upmanship.

I am also a skeptic, which means I generally I avoid any sort of cure to my ailment which involves any of the following:

  1. Alternative medicine
  2. Herbal remedies, or
  3. Witch-doctors
  4. (Oh, before you ask, I do class Red Wine as a mainstream remedy for most illnesses)

So imagine my surprise when I found that there are actually three things of an “alternative” nature which are really helping me out with my back injury. They are:

  1. Acupuncture – once upon a time, the idea that having tiny needles put in my back would make me feel better would have made me laugh. Now I am a convert.
  2. Massage – I always thought that a massage was a way to pay someone to send you to sleep. Now I realise that a deep-tissue sports massage will actually make me cry if it is done well, and I cry as often as I admit I am wrong (i.e. never)
  3. Super Blue Stuff – this combination of menthol, capsicum oleoresin and emu oil really helps me take my mind off the pain. Now, the skeptic in me says that that is because my back is so superheated that it distracts my attention from the pain, but for whatever reason it works. Especially when I combine it with a hearty dose of non-alternative Co-codamol

  1. Well, lately I was convinced I had the ebola virus while the docor said it was just a flu… anyway, when i feel bad, i always feel like noone could possibly suffer that much :)
and as for the cure, a part of the red wine, one of my ulimate cures is staying home staring at the tv and calling my friends to hear how sorry they are to hear i’m not doing good :)
    take care!
